How to get an Ausländerbehörde appointment, practical guide

Booking at the Ausländerbehörde, especially Berlin LEA, is often the biggest admin challenge. This guide covers tricks not on the official website.

Appointment tricks

Trick 1: Golden hours

Cancelled slots open daily. Best times:

• 7:00 a.m., new upload
• 9:00 a.m., previous day cancellations
• 12:00 p.m., lunch cancellations
• 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., evening cancellations
• Thursday and Friday, most releases

Trick 2: Weekdays

From experience:

• Monday and Tuesday worst
• Thursday best
• After public holidays: system refresh

Trick 3: Interface language

LEA Berlin: if German empty, try English, sometimes different slots (bug).

Trick 4: Check all categories

LEA categories:

• "Verlängerung Aufenthaltstitel"
• "Erste Erteilung Aufenthaltstitel"
• "Familiennachzug"
• "Verpflichtungserklärung"

Similar category may work, clerk often processes instead of sending you away.

Wording matters:

Good:

• "Antrag auf Fiktionsbescheinigung, Termin nicht verfügbar"

Bad:

• "Brauche Termin"
• "Hilfe!"

Trick 8: Neighboring city

If main city impossible and legal move possible (e.g. Berlin → Brandenburg): new Anmeldung + easier appointment.

Warning: only if you actually live there. Fake Anmeldung is criminal.

Confirms you applied for renewal and stay remains valid until decision.

When needed?

• Permit expiring, appointment after expiry
• Renewal submitted, no decision yet
• Urgent travel, cannot wait

How to get it?

2. Act before expiry
3. By post (2 to 4 weeks) or short appointment (~15 minutes)
4. Cost ~20 to 60 euros

Validity

• Usually 3 or 6 months
• Works like main permit
• Schengen travel ok, return from non-EU risky without full renewal

Lawyer, when really needed?

Definitely get lawyer for:

• Permit rejected
• Deportation threat
• International marriage complex
• Citizenship rejected
• Familiennachzug complex (spouse in Iran)
• Major job change conflicting with permit

Critical points for newcomers

1. Keep Iranian documents ready

Official translations once, digital + physical:

• Birth certificate
• Marriage certificate
• Children's documents
• Degrees

Cost ~200 to 500 euros, for all appointments.

2. Marriage recognition

Iranian marriage is not automatically valid in Germany:

• Standesamt needs official documents, sometimes Nachholung ceremony
• Can take months
• Lawyer/consulate before decisions

3. Consistent name spelling

Name must match everywhere:

• Passport
• Aufenthaltstitel
• Meldebescheinigung
• Krankenkasse
• Bank

One letter difference can ruin appointment. Fix at first visit.

4. Delayed documents from Iran

If waiting on document from Iran:

• Inform Ausländerbehörde before expiry
• Ask if temporary documents suffice
• Often 4 to 8 week extension

5. Translation rules: Standesamt vs Ausländerbehörde

• Ausländerbehörde: any sworn translator
• Standesamt: sometimes state-specific only, check first

6. Travel with Fiktionsbescheinigung

• Germany and Schengen: ok
• Iran: risky, problems on return at airport
• Avoid Iran travel until full renewal if possible
